F.A.Q.

SHOULD WE HAVE A SECOND PHOTOGRAPHER?

ABSOLUTELY. You will get twice the amount of coverage on your wedding day. If something were to happen to me, you would still have a hired, professional photographer ready and able to photograph your special day. My wedding photographer came down with kidney stones en route to our wedding. My wife and I were relieved that he had hired another world class photographer to second shoot. It is definitely worth the extra investment!

HOW MANY PHOTOS DO WE GET?

This depends on many factors, including: weather, venue, ceremony time, family, personalities, bridal party size, and the amount of wedding day coverage purchased. For a full day of coverage, I typically deliver 500-1000 images.

DOES THE PHOTOGRAPHER OWN THE RIGHTS TO THE PHOTOS?

Yes, meaning that you cannot sell the photos for profit or use them for personal portfolio purposes. You will be granted the printing rights and are welcome to print as many photos as you desire. I also give you permission to make copies of the disc and back the photos up. I DO NOT guarantee I will have copies of your photos if you lose them, due to storage limitations. And I have the right to use them for portfolio purposes.

IS THE RETAINING DEPOSIT REFUNDABLE?

Not under any circumstance. The purpose of the retainer is to hold your date until the day of the wedding. After a retainer is paid in full, the date it is not available to be booked by anyone else. If you chose to cancel your date for any reason, or decide to forgo services with Jeff Marsh Studios the retainer will be forfeited. The amount of the retainer is applied to the final ending balance for weddings paid in full.

WHAT HAPPENS IF IT RAINS?

I am from the Pacific Northwest so the rain doesn’t scare me! I encourage you to have jackets and umbrellas on hand so we are not limited to shoot indoors. Shooting in the rain is entirely up to you. If you are up for it, I will be too! The rain will not stop me from returning a quality product, I know you will be satisfied with.

WHAT IS A “TRASH THE DRESS” SHOOT?

Some brides realize that they will never have use for their dress again, and want to have a little fun. I take this opportunity to shoot brides in some of the most fun places, I otherwise might not be able to do. This might include swimming pools, the beach, mud pits, you name it. It provides for some great memories and images, as well as gives you a chance to get some more wedding portraits without the pressures and time-constraints of the wedding day.

HOW LONG UNTIL WE SEE OUR PHOTOS?

I typically return photos in a 6-8 week time frame. This is dependent on the time of year and my current work load.

DO YOU POST ALL YOUR WEDDINGS ONLINE?

I do my best to blog and post all photos publicly, but it is not a guarantee that any photos will be posted. During the heat of wedding season, I may not post photos as frequently.

WHAT DETERMINES COSTS?

Education, professional quality gear, wages for second photographers, editing time, current competitive rates, gear rental, and insurance. I am very frugal in my business operations and do not operate on credit. This in turn lowers my overhead and keeps operating costs down. My prerogative is to ensure that the value of my services is fair to competition and consumer demand.

DO YOU OFFER DISCOUNTS?

The wedding packages are priced according to all the factors listed above and there is not room to lower costs without removing part of the package. This circumstance is similar to you being asked to voluntarily take a pay-cut but work the same amount.

WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP THE PHOTOS REACH THEIR BEST POTENTIAL?

Smile! Enjoy your wedding day and have fun! Engagement sessions are a great way to get comfortable in front of the camera. When you can, choose a venue with as much natural light as possible. Doit-yourself decorations are great and always fun in photos. Use LOTS of colors.

DO YOU ENCOURAGE WEDDING VIDEOGRAPHY?

Very much so. Nothing jogs your memory like motion-picture. We can do both! 5MileFilms.com

WILL JEFF BE SHOOTING THE WEDDING?

Absolutely. Unless I come down with an illness that prohibits me from walking, or a major family emergency, I will be shooting the wedding.

WHY HIRE A PROFESSIONAL?

I understand the amount of time and effort it takes to build and nurture an artistic skill and eye. There is a great deal of continued education and training that helps me stay relevant with the current trends and technology. I spend my 40+ hours a week doing what I love to do – photography. I believe it is the most important investment you can make when planning your wedding.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A STUDIO PHOTOGRAPHER AND A PHOTOJOURNALIST?

Studio photography has been around for quite a while. A studio photographer shoots in a studio and spends a majority of their time posing photos that will later be purchased. They charge per print and hold onto the “negatives”. A photojournalist captures moments and memories as they happen. Sure, there still is a good amount of “posing” that takes place, but in a more nature way. These photos are shot with the goal in mind of capturing a story. I aspire to capture the story of your love on your wedding day. Most photojournalists deliver a disc of images with the entire day for a flat rate. There will be more up front cost, using a photojournalist as they are not working to make a profit from print sales. I am a photojournalist.

SHOULD WE BUY AN ALBUM FROM YOU?

YES, YES, YES. The album will be professionally designed with the best photos from your day. I have one of the best album companies make it. It is expensive and very worth it.

IS IT OK FOR MY COUSIN TO SHOOT PHOTOS?

Definitely. I do not mind if a family member or friend hang around and shoot photos, so long as they are not a distraction, interfere with the creative process and appear in images. If any of these factors becomes an issue, I will at that point ask them to refrain from taking photos. It is great to have friends and family shoot and share, but is never fun when “Uncle Bob” is in the background of every photo and is asking for the bride and groom to continuously pose for him. This will indeed take away from our time shooting with you.

DO YOU EDIT THE PHOTOS?

Every photo goes through a color correction process so that all the photos flow well. I will also select some of the best images for online posting in which I will add my creative editing touch to them.

WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE?

Canon camera bodies and lenses.

DO YOU DO SELECTIVE COLORING?

Nope. Selective coloring is a blast from the past and isn’t part of the style I like to stay within. I also do not do much vignetting, fading and sepia. What you see on my portfolio sites is what you should expect, if you consider the suggestions we provide for your wedding.

HOW MUCH DOES MY INVESTMENT COST?

Portrait sessions begin at $400 and Wedding Packages start at $3000.

CAN YOU MAKE OUR PHOTOS LOOK LIKE THIS PHOTOGRAPHER/WEDDING?

Each photographer has their own style which has evolved over years of shooting, learning and experience. It is impossible to imitate another photographer’s style, nor do I want to. I stay with my style because it is what I have created and what I like. I want to be unique from the next photographer. I would always prefer my clients to hire me because they like my style and my business practices. If you have certain poses and shots that you like, keep them in mind for the day we shoot. We can capture some of those ideas.

    Hi Jeff!

We are Ashli and Joe and we recently became super engaged! (Not just normal engaged, by the way… it’s a thing.)

You came HIGHLY recommended by several other wedding vendors that I’ve (ashli) worked with, as well as past clients I have worked with. As a makeup artist, I thought I’d know the who’s who of wedding photographers, but it was such a breath of fresh air to have your name passed along to us. Your photography is breathtaking.

Joe and I were wondering what your schedule looks like for September 2014, and also a few more details would be awesome in terms of what your packages offer, price points, etc.

Thanks a bunch and we look forward to hearing from you. Have an awesome week!
